Who are the Saint Cecilia Singers?
We are a friendly group of around 30 accomplished amateur and semi-professional singers who love to sing challenging repertoire to a high standard.
We have strong links with Gloucester cathedral, having been founded in 1949 by Donald Hunt, the Assistant Organist. For most of our 74 year history, our choir has been conducted by the Assistant Director of Music of Gloucester Cathedral, currently Jonathan Hope. |
As the affiliated chamber choir of Gloucester Cathedral, we support the Cathedral’s work by:
- Singing regular Evensongs when the cathedral choir is absent.
- Offering professional development for Gloucester Cathedral’s Assistant Director of Music as the choir’s Artistic Director and conductor.
- Keeping abreast of the cathedral’s choral outreach activities and supporting where we can.
- Taking the highest possible standard of music out to the county and beyond.
- Providing a level of musical opportunity for adult amateur singers not covered by other cathedral affiliated choirs.
Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings in St John’s Church, Northgate Street, Gloucester starting at 7.30pm.

Orpheus could lead the savage race;
And trees unrooted left their place;
Sequacious of the lyre:
But bright Cecilia rais'd the wonder high'r;
When to her organ, vocal breath was giv'n,
An angel heard, and straight appear'd
Mistaking earth for Heav'n
From 'A Song for St Cecilia’s Day' - John Dryden
